  The BPW Breast Cancer Fund was created by Past State President Suzanne Dalton (1990-91) to offer hope and help to those facing this insidious disease. Any BPW Florida member in good standing may request a $250 grant on behalf of a Florida resident (member or non-member) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer, determined to be at high risk, or received mammogram results requiring further testing.   This presentation will provide a clear explanation of each Amendment on the November ballot and what a Yes vote and a No vote actually mean. This is an opportunity to learn what each amendment does and how it affects you and state and local budgets.This presentation provides the information needed to make educated choices at the polls.

  SPEAKER BIO

  John Scibak - John joined LWVSRQ in 2024 after speaking at a chapter event. He has worked in health care and human services and has held academic positions at universities in Indiana and Massachusetts. John served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 2003 through 2019 where he co-chaired several legislative committees, including Consumer Protection and Professional Licensure, Labor and Workforce Development, Public Service, and Higher Education. John and his wife, Patricia, retired to Sarasota in 2019.

  Our Book Club Mission: This book club will focus on stories written by women, about women, and for women. Our aim is to create a space where pages come alive with conversation, where every chapter sparks reflection, and where words become tools for growth, empathy, and action.

  • We will select a book that either highlights women’s journeys, is authored by women, or offers wisdom and guidance for women in all walks of life.
  • Selections will span genres—memoir, fiction, self-development, and beyond—ensuring our reading list is as diverse and dynamic as the women in our group.
  • We have developed a list of suggestions provided by previous Book Club members and we all agreed these are great books. If you have books you’d like to suggest we add to this list, please email BPW/FL and we can add to the master list.
  • Our gatherings will foster thoughtful discussion, mutual encouragement, and the sharing of personal insights, forging bonds among members and igniting new perspectives.

  Cloud Cuckoo Land follows five characters whose stories, despite spanning nearly six centuries, are bound together by their mutual love for a single book. Twelve-year-old Anna, an orphan, lives inside the formidable walls of Constantinople in a house of women who make their living embroidering the robes of priests. Restless, insatiably curious, Anna learns to read, and in this ancient city, famous for its libraries, she finds a codex containing the story of Aethon, which she reads to her ailing sister as the walls of the only place she has known are bombarded in the great siege of Constantinople. Outside the walls is Omeir, a village boy, miles from home, conscripted with his beloved oxen into the invading army. Soon, their paths will cross.
  
  Five hundred years later, in a library in Idaho, octogenarian Zeno, who learned Greek as a prisoner of war, rehearses five children in a play adaptation of Aethon’s story, preserved against all odds through centuries. Tucked among the library shelves is a bomb, planted by a troubled, idealistic teenager, Seymour. And in a not-so-distant future, alone on an interstellar ship called the Argos, Konstance is sealed in a vault, copying on scraps of sacking the story of Aethon, told to her by her father. She has never set foot on our planet. Cloud Cuckoo Land is the story of these lives, gloriously intertwined.
