29 Jun Member Spotlight: Sheri McCandless
My name is Sheri McCandless and I am honored to serve as your President-Elect for 2020-2021.
I am a native Floridian, born and raised in Boynton Beach, Florida, and have lived in Florida all my life. I reside in the western suburbs of unincorporated Palm Beach County, in the town of Loxahatchee.
I am employed full-time as an Administrative Assistant for the Florida corporate office of Meyer Jabara Hotels, a hotel management company, and for The Meyer Companies, a family office of various entities helping to manage the family’s wealth.
I have transitioned through several careers in my professional life. My first job was as the receptionist and assistant to the Vice President of a local bank after I graduated from high school. I left that job to give birth to my daughter. I went back into the workforce as a legal secretary and worked first for a general practice attorney and then for various law firms, working my way up to legal assistant/paralegal for several area law firms during my 11 years working in the legal profession. In 1988, I joined my husband in his new and growing small business as a reprographics service for architects. Our business morphed into the first copy center in Palm Beach County to specialize in litigation support services and we owned/operated the business for 21 years, until we sold it in 2009. After working for the new owner for one year, I then volunteered for a local affiliate of Dress for Success, a non-profit that suits unemployed women and prepares them for re-entry into the workforce. I helped with administration, client suiting and training. I also became an assistant to a virtual assistant, which led to starting my own business as a project-based administrative assistant, working onsite for solo entrepreneurs. I had that business for five years until an opportunity presented itself through two mutual friends for the full-time position I currently have.
I joined BPW in 1994, and was mentored and encouraged to serve in various leadership positions at the LO level, ultimately serving as president of my LO, BPW/Gold Coast. In 1996, I was again encouraged by my BPW mentors to run for state office and served in various leadership positions, ultimately serving as State President in 2000-2001. I then joined our Education Foundation Board as a Director, Secretary and President for two terms.
Personally, I have been married to the same wonderful man, Hugh, for 42 years. We have a 41 year old daughter, Heather, who is married to David and they have provided us with two beautiful granddaughters, ages 20 and 13. My hobbies are social media (I can get lost on Facebook) and crocheting.
My passion though is BPW, as it has done so much for me in my 26 years as a member. I have been mentored and have mentored other working and business women, as well as students from our Education Foundation’s Scholarship House at the FAU campus in Boca Raton. I have learned how to read financial statements that helped with my businesses, leadership skills that have helped me in my personal and professional life, and how to lead an organization. But I consider myself most fortunate to have gained many wonderful lifetime friendships with BPW members. I have been a member of many business, networking and women’s groups over the years; BPW is my most favorite of all of them and why I stay as a member.
